Sodero argentino

One of the things that is really cool about Argentina…is that it never stopped being more economical here to be green. For example, we buy delicious returnable glass bottle Pepsi here instead of plastic 2 liters. It’s cheaper, tastier, and greener.

Today was the beginning of one great relationship – with the soda man! (The soda man fulfills the same role in old-time, bawdy Argentine jokes as the 1950s milk man, but our relationship is purely a professional one!)

We already have water delivered to our house in a 20 gallon jug for just 4 dollars every 2 weeks. The same guy that brings us that now is also bringing us sifones de soda, also known as agua con gas, or to Americans, sparkling water. A 1.5 liter glass siphon is just 2 pesos, or a little over 50 cents. I squeeze in a little fresh lemon juice in it and get my soda fix with zero calories, no caffeine, and none of the creepy chemicals of Diet Coke.

There’s only a few places left in the States where you can get your soda water this way, from the guy who brings it to your door. NPR did a story about disappearing jobs in America, and one was about one of the last soda men standing in NYC.

I’m such a romantic about some things. And it’s so incredibly quaint to drink my soda water out of this glass siphon, which encourages me even more to reach for the calorie-free substitute.
